Sci-Fi Modernism: The becoming of Hong Kong / Design Anthology Magazine / Writing, Photography / 2017 – 2022
‘Sci-Fi Modernism: The becoming of Hong Kong’ is a project developed out necessity for appreciation of Hong Kong uniqueness and weirdness, aiming to narrate and translate to the wider audience the origins of the city’s urban language. Six articles with photographs published in Design Anthology Magazine, investigate the beginnings of modernism and high-density metropolis, with typological approach looking at city’s dominating elements and defining moments: First high-rise commercial tower Jardine House and the economic boom of the 70s, mobility and the elevated footbridge system, Tao Ho and the beginning of high-end high-density living in Mid-Levels, Social Housing and the spread of ‘hashtag’ tower, Henry Seidler and Asian influences as well as the case of unusual Postmodern structures.
‘70% Visibility’ is an initiative curious about the history of the region after the industrial revolution and its relationship with the present, hoping to raise a little more sympathy for the not always aesthetically pleasing dense city.
